Setting up your main connection and extending it into weak spots are two different jobs. Start with the one you're holding.
Pick a central spot, not a corner
Set the router up off the floor, near the middle of the home if possible, away from microwaves, thick walls, and metal cabinets. Plug in power and the internet line, then wait for the status light to stop blinking.
Join the setup network
On a phone or laptop, connect to the temporary network name printed on the router's label or base plate. If the maker provides a companion app, that's usually the fastest path through setup.
Log into the admin console
Type the router's local address into a browser and sign in with the default credentials on the label. This console is where every setting below actually lives.
Rename, repassword, re-encrypt
Replace the default network name and password, switch encryption to WPA3 (or WPA2 if that's not offered), and save. Reconnect your devices using the new details — this one step prevents most break-ins.
Start the pairing in the same room as the router
Even though the extender's final home is elsewhere, plug it in near the router first. Pairing succeeds far more reliably at close range than it does across the house.
Pair it — by app, browser, or WPS button
Join the extender's temporary network from your device and open its setup page, or press the WPS button on both units if they support one-touch pairing.
Hand it your home network's password
Select your existing router's network name from the list the extender finds, then enter your real WiFi password so it can pull an internet connection from the router.
Move it halfway, then check the light
Relocate the extender to roughly the midpoint between the router and the weak room. A solid (not blinking) signal light means the backhaul link is strong enough to extend.
